If you know the location of the installation of Apache Tomcat (e.g. /opt/server/apache-tomcat-8.0.30), type the following commands to start and stop the tomcat.

To stop  :

praveen@praveen-Lenovo-G510:~$ sudo /opt/server/apache-tomcat-8.0.30/bin/shutdown.sh
Using CATALINA_BASE:   /opt/server/apache-tomcat-8.0.30
Using CATALINA_HOME:   /opt/server/apache-tomcat-8.0.30
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /opt/server/apache-tomcat-8.0.30/temp
Using JRE_HOME:        /usr
Using CLASSPATH:       /opt/server/apache-tomcat-8.0.30/bin/bootstrap.jar:/opt/server/apache-tomcat-8.0.30/bin/tomcat-juli.jar

To start:

praveen@praveen-Lenovo-G510:~$ sudo /opt/server/apache-tomcat-8.0.30/bin/startup.sh
Using CATALINA_BASE:   /opt/server/apache-tomcat-8.0.30
Using CATALINA_HOME:   /opt/server/apache-tomcat-8.0.30
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /opt/server/apache-tomcat-8.0.30/temp
Using JRE_HOME:        /usr
Using CLASSPATH:       /opt/server/apache-tomcat-8.0.30/bin/bootstrap.jar:/opt/server/apache-tomcat-8.0.30/bin/tomcat-juli.jar
Tomcat started.
