Chhaava Joins the ₹500 Crore Club – Can It Become Bollywood’s Biggest Hit?

Vicky Kaushal’s latest film, Chhaava, has achieved a remarkable milestone by crossing the ₹500 crore mark at the Indian box office. This historical action movie, directed by Laxman Utekar, showcases the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire. Released on 14 February 2025, Chhaava has captivated audiences nationwide, leading to its impressive box office performance.

The film had a strong opening, particularly in Maharashtra, grossing substantial amounts on its first day. It continued its momentum, collecting significant figures worldwide during its opening weekend. Within two weeks, the film crossed ₹400 crore net in India. On its fourth Friday, it achieved the milestone of ₹500 crore net in India, and the current trend suggests that it should easily surpass ₹600 crore net in its lifetime. Whether it will become Bollywood’s biggest grosser remains to be seen.

Chhaava Joins the ₹500 Crore Club

This success not only marks a significant achievement for Vicky Kaushal but also highlights the film’s widespread appeal and the audience’s appreciation for historical narratives. Chhaava also became producer Dinesh Vijan’s (Maddock Films) second ₹500 crore blockbuster within just eight months, following the massive success of Stree 2. Considering that only a few Bollywood movies (Jawan, Stree 2, Animal, Pathaan, Gadar 2) have crossed the ₹500 crore mark, Chhaava joining this exclusive club is a remarkable achievement.

Notably, among the five films in the ₹500 crore club, Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan and Pathaan have been surrounded by controversy due to alleged corporate bookings—where producers reportedly buy tickets themselves to inflate box office collections.

The film’s success can be attributed to several factors, including Kaushal’s compelling portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj, gripping storytelling, and high production values. The movie has resonated with viewers, drawing them into the rich history of the Maratha Empire. Positive word-of-mouth and critical acclaim have further fueled its box office performance, solidifying Chhaava’s position as a cinematic triumph in Indian cinema.
